Often when we are dealing with a difficult circumstance or work/personal relationship our thought process is hampered. I describe it like driving in the fog, when we use the white line or the grass verge as our guide, we are anxious as we are unable to see the road ahead, meeting oncoming traffic may result in hitting the break.
Using a reflective tool can help, take a few minutes to stop, think and consider. Are we working or thinking above the line or below the line?
ABOVE THE LINE
OPEN CURIOUS TO LEARNING
BELOW THE LINE
CLOSED DEFENSIVE COMMITTED TO BEING RIGHT
When we are above the line, we are leading with all our senses open, we are aware, we are “tuned into” our surroundings, we are aware of our responses and how they will land with another person.
The skills we engage to lead and work above the line are: openness, being curious, working with intention and an understanding of the path necessary to achieve that intention, this is also known as ‘conscious leadership’.
Simple questions can help us move above the line:
“It is important to remember that in business, everything we accomplish is ultimately done with and through other people. That is what conscious leaders do – we inspire, motivate, develop and lead others. To be appreciative of the gifts that other people share with us and with our teams is uplifting and creates a rewarding feeling of fulfilment.”
